There is plenty of mis-truths being thrown around over Melo. The Italian press are stating that Juventus are in talks to buy the Brazilian midfielder and thus thwarting Arsenal’s attempts at luring Melo to the Emirates.
But once again in step Fiorentina, and they dismiss all these rumours and skulduggery. There is one thing to say about Fiorentina, they are acting as gentlemen, and also putting Arsenal fans at ease with each press release.
They have once again categorically stated that Arsenal are the only club with whom they are in talks with and that Arsene Wenger has asked to speak to the President of the club to discuss matter further. Fiorentina are interested in Eboue that is certain. Wenger must realise that £15million plus Eboue is a price worth paying if it means we can buy the midfield enforcer everyone has been craving for.
Some people think we are crazy to let Eboue go, personally I would drive him to Florence and drop Adebayor off at the San Siro. Eboue offers us very little constructively going forward, he runs and runs like Forest Gump with no end product. I am sick and tired of his pathetic histrionics every time he falls over. To even compare him to Ray Parlour is an insult. This is oen great way of getting rid of the troublesome Ivorian.
Of course Felipe Melo has stated he is a happy at Fiorentina and wants to stay at the club that has helped become such a sought after player. Why is saying this? Money! If a player asks for a transfer, then he will not receive some of the transfer fee. The other reason is that if a player indicates he wants to leave, and then he doesn’t, i.e. Adebayor last summer, then the fans turn on him.
It appears that Arsenal are serious about acquiring Felipe Melo, we should conclude this transfer this week.
The confusion over the potential transfer of Felipe Melo has been somewhat clarified by Fiorentina with an official statement. The Italian club has stated that Melo has not signed for Juventus.
The club has made it clear that there is only club that has made an offer for Melo, who recently signed a new contract that included a release clause of £21million. That club is Arsenal. Fiorentina have not stated what the offer was, but they have asked for Emmanuel Eboue to be included in any potential deal, thus reducing the transfer fee.
Fiorentina sporting director Pantaleo Corvino made a statement saying:
“In case the footballer has already reached an agreement with any club, the release clause fixed with the player himself is €25million. We would not contemplate any exchange, unless it is to the liking of Fiorentina.
“Arsenal is the only club to have come close to the sum established by the release clause.
“Fiorentina in turn proposed to the aforementioned club a reduction in the amount set by the release clause by including right-back Eboue in the deal.”
Meanwhile, Melo’s agent has said that he has not been in any discussions with any club over terms for his player and will not do so until Fiorentina agree a fee with another club. This is normal agent talk which means we have agreed personal terms with a potential new club but will deny it at this moment in time.
Fiorentina’s statement is very revealing, Arsenal, as has been long rumoured have been in talks with Fiorentina over Melo. Furthermore, Arsenal have offered a fee that has Fiorentina interested, probably £15million. Fiorentina are willing to do business, but they want Eboue as part of any deal.
I suspect that the deal will be concluded early next week. This will certainly strengthen Arsenal’s midfield and lay to rest the myth that Wenger is not willing to spend big money on players.
If Wenger is prepared to let Eboue go, he will need to ensure that we have someone in reserve who can play as a right-back, and that player could be another Brazilian, Werder Bremen’s Naldo who though is primarily a centre-back, can play at right-back.
So the news from Italy is that Felipe Melo has a signed a new contract at Fiorentina. What does this mean? There has been so much traffic over a proposed transfer to Arsenal that it cannot all be dismissed as ideal cyber-space talk. Something must have been going on in the background and something might still be happening.
We are mere mortal and all we can do is merely speculate, but players have signed new contracts with teams as a way of giving their current clubs a larger transfer fee. Admittedly this is not normally done in the same transfer window, but I do not rule out the possibility of this happening. By signing a new contract Fiorentina can demand say £20 million, as opposed to his buyout clause of £14 million.
This is a story that has some more distance to run; either that or I am an eternal optimist.
Could this week be the most exciting week in Arsenal’s transfer history?
With the Confederation’s Cup over and Brazil crowned champions, it is time to see if Arsenal’s pursuit of Felippe Melo is indeed a true pursuit or merely more newspaper talk. Arsenal are reported to have offered Phillipe Senderos as part of the deal, but Wenger will not accept Fiorentina’s valuation of £21 million for the Brazilian international.
With pre-season training due to start next, Arsene will be looking at securing the signature of the Brazil central midfield enforcer sooner rather than later.
Of the transfer stories this is the more realistic.
Now we enter the field of Sunday newspaper fantasy.
The Sunday Times says Wenger is ready to bid Karim Benzema in the knowledge that the 21-year-old France striker would rather join Arsenal this summer than Manchester United. Arsenal have also been made aware of Benzema’s desire to work with Wenger.
The fee is expected to be in the region of £25 million. This is only possible if we sell Adebayor to AC Milan. This is now gathering pace as AC Milan have said their initial discussion with Arsene Wenger was “friendly”. Quite clearly Wenger sees the departure of Adebayor the key to financing any bid for Karim Benzema.
Could Arsenal really bid for Benzema and trump Alex Ferguson to his number one summer target. Benzema will bring us the speed and guile of Henry; it would be truly an amazing capture.
But is doesn’t end here, oh no, it is Sunday madness after all, so after Benzema we have Arsenal launching a £40 million bid for Franck Ribery.
The Daily Star Sunday says Gunners boss Arsene Wenger believes he is now close to pulling off one of the transfer coups of the summer and winning the race to sign the Bayern Munich winger.
According to the newspaper, which is probably the most un respected paper of them all, Wenger will offer of £30m – plus £10m-rated Danish hitman Nicklas Bendtner, this is supposed to be acceptable to Bayern coach Louis van Gaal.
A source close to Arsenal’s top brass confirmed: “Ribery was on the agenda at a recent board meeting – and it could even be a done deal by now. We’re very optimistic.”
So if we believe the week-end tittle tattle we will see Melo, Benzema and Ribery all arrive at Arsenal over the next week or so.
