In the summer Arsene Wenger made a surprise purchase, Portuguese midfielder Amaury Bischoff. He signed on a free transfer from Werder Bremen and Wenger admitted he was a bit of a gamble.
Bischoff joined us whilst injured, and has slowly built his strength and has played five times for the reserves and made two appearances in the Carling Cup team.
Bischoff made his Portugal under-21 debut last night against Switzerland and scored. Boss Rui Cacador was full of praise for Bischoff, who scored a cracking strike in a comfortable win for the Portuguese.
Cacador said, “Bischoff’s goal will motivate him, just like the attitude of all the players on the pitch will motivate them. I was happy with Bischoff’s debut.”
The 21-year-old who signed from Werder Bremen in the summer admitted he was very ambitious and wanted to look forward to a bright future with Portugal:
He said, “I’m very happy with my debut. Now my aim is to get to the senior team. But for this to happen I have to earn my place at Arsenal,”
With the indifferent season we have had, Wenger has been unable to give Bischoff an opportunity in the first team, not even coming on for say 10 or 15 minutes. Bischoff is desperate to impress and earn an extension to his contract, which expires in the summer.
With players returning from injury, our results will improve, but with more plays available for selection, it will be harder for Bischoff to make it onto the bench, never mind show us what he can do in the first team.
He will be competing with the likes of Merida, Randall, Wilshere, Lansbury for a first team squad berth for next season, Wenger has followed the developments of these four boys for many years. Bischoff will have to do something special in training or whislt playing for the reserves to earn a new contract.
