Board Puts Pressure on Wenger to Spend
Reports in The Sun claim that the Board want Wenger to spend money this summer. They are feeling the heat from the fans; this is self-evident with swathes of empty seats beckoning for the forthcoming Emirates Cup. With 8 days to go there are plenty of seats available. The club has been advertising heavily in the London Evening Standard and Talksport has been heavily involved in promoting the tournament.
Whilst the board can live without trophies, what will hurt the board and the club are empty seats, especially in our prestigious pre-season tournament.
The fans vented their anger towards the board on the last day of the season when we were asked to pay an extra 6%, yet we were not seeing any tangible signs on the pitch of improvement.
Wenger and Gazidis told us it will be a busy summer for Arsenal in terms of transfers, so we all rubbed our hands together and expected big signings early. As usual with Arsenal’s transfer activity it all amounted to zero. The usual suspects linked to Arsenal, Samba, Cahill, Benzema, Melo, Jagielka, but as is the norm, nothing has happened except for the signing of Gervinho. Summer 2011 has been a carbon copy of 2010 and 2009 and the fans and the board have had enough.
Wenger has already lost one battle in that the board, namely Ivan Gazidis, forced the Far East tour upon Wenger and Gazidis has gone further and stated we will tour again and sooner rather than later. This is pure anathema to Wenger who loved his cosy training camp in Austria coupled with a couple of matches against local 3rd or 4th division teams.
Wenger is under pressure from the fans and the board to spend the money that IS available. Wenger needs to abandon his policy of youth development and replace it with winning trophies.
