Is Mata Next For Arsenal?
Having virtually sealed the deal for Gervinho, Wenger is looking to finalise his next signing, with Valencia and Spain midfielder Juan Mata high on the list.
Mata is a consistent player with Valencia, captaining Los Che last season to a Champions League spot. Whilst the player has not requested move, Valencia’s financial situation means they have to sell just to stand still. The Spain international has scored 33 goals in four seasons at Valencia, not a bad return. Mata plays on the left-wing, but this means nothing to Wenger who will play left footed players on the right and vice-versa or even through the centre.
The player’s agent, his father, has said that they are aware of foreign clubs interest in the player but are awaiting the decision of Valencia.
Mata has a reported £22M buy-out clause, but Wenger as always, is looking at spending £15M! Both the Daily Mirror and The Mail have us linked with Mata. The Mirror states that Wenger is confident of landing the left-winger for £15M, whilst The Mail brings Spurs into the equation and puts a £20M value on Mata.
Valencia have made provisions for the departure of Mata with the signing of Pablo Piatti from Almeria.
His recruitment, if it comes about will be interesting as with Gervinho, Walcott and Arshavin all playing similar roles where will Wenger fit them all in? What is not certain is that Nasri could see the recruitment of Gervinho and Mata as the “statement of intent” that he has been looking for to sign a new contract.
With Arsenal due to fly out to the Far East on Sunday and not return back until 19 July, do not expect anything to happen for the next 10 days or so.
