Hangeland – Tonight The Phoney War Ends

We will have a better indication tonight if Arsenal has made a bid or in talks with Fulham over their centre back Brede Hangeland.

Hangeland has been an Arsenal target since December, well a target as far as the newspapers and cyberspace is concerned, yet Arsenal does not appear to have made an approach.  Some stories had us bidding £15m others £10m.

Tonight Fulham play a qualifying game in the Europa League.  If Hangeland plays he will be ineligible to play for Arsenal in the Champions League until the knock-out stage.  If we are in talks he will have a slight strain and will not appear, if however as Hodgson has stated there have been no approaches he will play.  Alternatively the player may opt not to play so as to not jeopardise any potential transfer.

We will find out tonight whether we are close to bringing in the colossus to the Emirates.

UPDATE

  1. If you play in the Europa League you are only ineligible for the Europa League. It doesn’t effect eligibility for the Champions League. Sorry.

    • northbanklegend

No if you play in Europa League you are only eligible for Champions League at knockout stage.
Last season Real Madrid had to choose between Huntelaar and Diarra as both played in the UEFA Cup and they could only play one of them.

  2. im not sure, but under new rules would hangeland be able to play in the champions league with arsenal this season, even though fulham have played in the europa league qualifier…. it would be different if fulham were playing a champions league qualifier… correct me if im wrong, im just curious!

  3. ur talking shite because its only the quilifiers if he plays in the group stage then he wont be able to play until the knockouts

  4. Tonight will make no impact as to whether Hangeland will come or not as Wenger can just play Gallas/Vermaelen/Djourou/Senderos in the centre for Champions league.

  5. looks like he’s not coming then……

  6. BillikenGooner

I’m going to err on the side that he won’t be joining us. Which is a bummer, because with the cash we now have and losing Toure I had thought this would be an ideal and easy pickup. Maybe AW found something he didn’t like…

  7. plz wenger shd have this guy 4 arsenal next season he can make gunners balance go wenger go 4 this guyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

  8. Hangerland played today in Fulham’s 3-0 win. So I am in complete dark with this transfer. You never know what Arsene does.
Might be he can move for Hangerland later today. He is just waiting for the price to drop a bit. I fell same regarding Hunteler.
I don’t think he will go back to get Viera, might be Sissoko is a potential transfer target.

So if things go fine with all these transfers, I would expect Arsenal to finish strongly this season. Meanwhile every one is worried about Arsenal. I think they are good enough to overpower the likes of Villa, Mancity etc. Remember taht we will complete all our matches with big four by 1st week of March. So we have a good chance of winning the league this time.

  9. Has Arsen relised this perhaps not he and the board too busy counting the money

  10. Bill Wonneberger

Brede Hangeland did play this evening as the Cottagers easily handled FK Vetra in a 3-0 win.

IMHO, and for what it’s worth, even if Hangeland was Cup Tied for the Champions League, I still think he would be a welcome signing. From what little I’ve seen of him last season, I’ve been impressed with his “field sense” and his stamina. His size and physical presence would certainly be of help in the backfield, especially if the Gunners want to improve on their defense for set pieces, which seems to be a traditional weakspot for most of Arsene’s teams. I would also think that since winning the EPL is Arsenal’s top priority, he would certainly help.

As another thought, being at 28, and if Vieira is signed as a backup and in a “mentor” role for the likes of a Denilson, Ramsey, and/or Randall, this should help improve the coordination and overall quality of our transitional play between the backfield and midfield.

  11. Arshavin being cup tied didn’t stop us signing him.

    • northbanklegend

Yes that is correct, but it is rare to sign a player that is cuptied for the group stages. a few seasons ago Reyes refused to play for us against Dinamo Zagreb to ensure he was not cuptied when / if he went to Rela Madrid

  12. I have to admit this is the fourth time I have come across your website and Im diggin it! I added your site to my rss reader. Looking forward to see more updates!
