Sagna Mr Reliable
When Arsene sough to buy Bacary Sagna from Auxerre in the summer of 2007 for £7m, everyone had thought that Le Professor had lost his marbles.
Eboue had just completed a season at right-back and played well, though he was no longer ripping up trees with his performances, whilst Justin Hoyte did not disgrace himself when called upon by the manager, in addition we had a youngster, Kerrea Gilbert, whop had played well and was now serving a long apprenticeship on loan.
Why should we waste £7m on another right-back? Well there is that annoying saying around Arsenal, “Arsene knows.” Sagna eventually joined and slotted into the right-back berth and soon made it his own. Sagna is strong, athletic, good in the air, never shirks a challenge and you know that any winger coming up against Bacary will have a torrid time. Apart from one game, home against Sunderland, when the locks were missing, he has not had one bad game. He is Mr Reliable.
The aspects of his game that need improving are his attacking contributions. He needs to be able to deliver a better cross and he needs to venture further into the opponents penalty area. Sagna needs to increase the number of goals he score, maybe take the occasional pot shot.
Bacary has been an amazing buy from Arsene and has received very little recognition from the media or the fans.
