Three Matches to Decide Our Season
Arsenal enters the Christmas period with our three most important games of the season ahead of us. Christmas is a pivotal period and this year it is important that we keep in touch with the leaders until players come back from injuries or we buy some more players.
Over the Christmas period, we play Liverpool (home), Aston Villa (away) Portsmouth (home). Victory is all three will propel us within touching distance of the leaders whilst any defeat will leave us scrambling for 4th place.
We have already been written off by Harry Redknapp, he who knows about wining titles or even competing for a top four finish in all he years at West Ham, Portsmouth, and Southampton. So much is Harry clued on, that after his Chairman announced to the Spurs shareholders that there would be no purchases in January, Harry turns up and demands money and players for January!
Not satisfied with having been beaten by the Gunners, Rio Ferdinand has stated that, despite that we are only 8 points behind Liverpool (which could be 5 by Sunday), that we are no longer in the title race.
These two statements are if nothing else a rallying cry for Arsenal, its players and fans, there can be nothing more hurtful than being written off by your rivals, especially the manager of archrivals. Fans must cast their minds back to 1997 when we had lost 3-1 at home to Blackburn and trailed Manchester United by 12 points. We then strung together a twelve match-winning streak, which brought us the title. There is no reason why we cannot do the same this season; the title is there for the taking for the first team to string a set of results together. Wenger knows this and will look at strengthening the squad in January. However, that will all be a waste if we do not win our three Christmas games.
