The One that Got Away

August 2007, Arsenal made a last minute signing, Lassana Diarra fro £2M from Chelsea.  Everyone questioned this move, we already had Fabregas, Flamini, Gilberto, Diaby, Denilson.

Diarra could not break-through to the first team, and insisted on leaving in January.  Wenger should have insisted on a loan move, as the futures of Gilberto and Flamini were not assured, instead we settled for a £5M fee from Portsmouth.

As always with Wenger, the small print needs to read carefully in any transfer.  Arsenal insisted on a 25% sell-on clause, so now that Diarra is on his way to Real Madrid for £20M, Arsenal will receive £5M, making the total fee for Diarra £10M, not bad for a player who only played seven games for us.

Let’s hope that this money is put to good use in January.
