West Ham 0-2 Arsenal – Match Report

A tricky trip to Upton Park, a ground where we have not done well in recent years, resulted in all three points going to Arsenal, eventually.

Gallas was brought back into the team, whilst Adebayor and Diaby were relegated to the bench and Denilson was absent.

Arsenal started off brightly and early chances fell to Walcott (twice), Bendtner and van Persie only to be foiled by Green in the West Ham goal. In between, Bellamy had a great chance for West Ham but Almunia saved well.

Arsenal were solid in defence, but having Carlton Cole as your lone attacker is not asking much for many defence. In midfield whenever the ball came out to Walcott there was always a threat, whilst Nasri had a very quiet game and it was no surprise to see him substituted in second half.

Arsenal prodded in the second half but with no real cutting edge until Adebayor and Diaby came on for Walcott and Nasri.  Van Persie moved out to he right and started to look threatening ( a new role for van Persie is on the cards once Eduardo returns). Diaby was more direct and stronger than Nasri. The West Ham goal started to live a charmed existence, van Persie struck a shot that was well saved by Green and minutes later Green was beaten by van Persie’s free kick which hit the post.

Minutes later Arsenal made the breakthrough.  A mazy run by Adebayor resulted in a cross that was turned into his own goal by Faubert.   As always the momentum went the other way and West ham started to press but without really creating anything. In the last minute a West Ham corner was half cleared, the ball crossed into the area, but Arsenal cleared it to Bendtner, who looked up and sent a 50 yard pass to Adebayor. Ade charged at the goal, Robert Green rushed out , but the Togolese striker ran around him and slotted the ball into the empty goal.

Arsenal ran out well deserved winners against one of the most inept West Ham teams in years.

Line up- Almunia; Eboue, Gallas, Silvestre, Clichy; Walcott (Adebayor),Song, Fabregas, Nasri (Diaby); van Persie (Sagna), Bendtner.  Subs not used – Fabianski, Toure, Djourou, Ramsey
