Arsenal 1-2 Hull City (Match Report)
To say this was a bad day at the office, will be a lie and letting the players off lightly. This was a disaster with too many players under performing and Wenger making a couple of mistakes.
Wenger resorted to Adebayor and van Persie up front, that was a mistake, neither was on the ball all game, van Persie was determined to score and took shots from everywhere, whilst the Togolese hitman had a nightmare game, Nothing has gone right to Adebayor and I wonder if Wenger was right not to sell him for £25M.
Hull turned up and were determined not to lie down and die, they fought for every ball, harassed the Arsenal players and never gave us a minute on the ball. They were physical and used every trick in the book to disrupt the game. Arsenal were bereft of ideas or guile in the first half.
The second half saw Walcott come to life creating problems on the right hand side, but Adebayor and van Persie played as if they were guaranteed a place for life and could not care. It was the young England striker who created Arsenal’s goal, a run into the box and cross from an acute angle, the ball was scrambled over the line by either Fabregas or an own goal.
Arsenal had several chances to increase their lead, but were made to regret their flippancy in front of goal, as Geovani strode forward and hit a wonder strike that had Arsenal fans applauding. Never mind thought Arsenal, we will move forward and score. but how wrong we were. Despite Eboue being taken off to loud boos and jeers, it was Hull who were more menacing as Arsenal moved back into poor passing.
From a corner, Cousin rode highest and headed Hull into the lead. This was Arsenal’s third goal conceded from a corner this season, something needs to be done about our defending from set pieces.
Arsenal poured men forward but to no avail. Then Wenger took off our most threatening player, Walcott to be replaced by Vela. Surely we should have sacrificed a full-back in these situations. Our attacks became disjointed, with Bendtner being forced out wide to provide width and supply the crosses. As the match went on, both Gallas and Toure went forward, Gallas hit the bar with a header, whilst Toure screwed a shot wide of the post with the goal at his mercy.
The final whistle brought to an end a disjointed and inept performance. Why Wenger persisted with Adebayor when he is clearly out of sorts. Van Persie must earn his place in the team , and when are we going to dispense with this short corner that never works?
Vela, Bendtner and Ramsey need to be given a chance to shake things up and Eboue should be be shown the door in January.
