If Eboue is the Answer, What was the Question?

His time is up - sell him now

His time is up - sell him now

Eboue has turned into a figure of ridicule at Arsenal, he has fallen from grace in a dramatic fashion.  He has lost his rightback position to Sagna, laboured at right wing last season, and now is threatening to make the central midfield position his own.  Wenger has a mild form of myopia when it comes to Eboue but why?

Eboue joined Arsenal from Beveren in January 2005.

It was not until the following season that Eboue burst onto the scene when Lauren was injured.  He was a revelation.  Strong, athletic, fast, everything we wanted to match Ashley Cole who did such a job on the left.  His partnership with Hleb helped Arsenal reach the Champions League final that season,  but it was at the final the true Eboue came out.  He dived to win us the free-kick from which Campbell scored.  The final was his high point, from then on it was all downhill.

The following season saw Eboue start as right back, all was going well until injury hit Eboue.  Justin Hoyte deputised and was a good replacement.  On his return to the team it was a different Eboue.  He got lazy, gave the ball away too often, his crosses were pathetic and the petulance started to set in.

Wenger saw this and spent £7m to recruit Bakary Sagna, relegating Eboue to back-up right back.  If it stopped at this we would be happy, but Wenger saw in Eboue, a right winger.  This from a player who could not run past anybody, had no ball skills to deceive defenders, could not cross to save his live, his shooting was laughable and he was completely lost in the opponents penalty area.  What did Wenger see in Eboue?  Everyone cringed at the thought of Eboue playing, yet Wenger persisting in imposing the Ivorian international on us.  Wenger even went on to say that Eboue was similar to Ray Parlour.  This was an insult too far for the fans.

With departures from midfield this summer, Wenger seeks to re-invent his favourite player as a central midfielder.  He wil make do for a game or two, but if Wenger thinks he is the answer to our midfield problem,  then Wenger has really lost the plot.  Do us a favour Arsene and dispatch Eboue to Spain or Italy for good, he is not fit to wear the Arsenal shirt.
