Champions League Draw
Friday sees Arsenal in the draw for the 3rd qualifying round of the Champions League for the third year in a row. Last season Arsenal were drawn against Sparta Prague, knocking out the Czech team 5-0 on aggregate, whilst the season before it was Dinamo Zagreb who were Arsenal’s opponents.
This is the last year that the current format is in place and it promises to be very interesting, not in the least as none of the second round games will have been concluded by the time the draw takes place on Friday in Nyons Switzerland.
Arsenal are one of the seeds for the 3rd qualifying round, which means we avoid Barcelona, Liverpool and Juventus. The following is a list of teams that are seeded. As the draw takes place before the 2nd round is concluded, even if Rangers are knocked out their opponents will still be seeded (first leg scores in brackets).
Glasgow Rangers or FBK Kaunus (0-0)
Panathinaikos or Dinamo Tbilisi (3-0)
FC Basel or IFK Goteburg (1-1)
Fenerbahçe or MTK Budapest (2-0)
Anderlecht or BATE Borisov (1-2)
That is the good news, the bad news is that amongst the unseeded teams there lie many pitfalls. Atletico Madrid, Galatasaray and Dynamo Kiev are amongst the teams that could be drawn against Arsenal in the next round.
The full list of Arsenal’s probable opponents are:
Sparta Praha or Sheriff Tiraspol (1-0)
Dinamo Kiev or Drogheda Utd (2-1)
Partizan Belgrade or Inter Baku (1-1)
Dinamo Zagreb NK Domzale (3-0)
Wisla Kraków or Beitar Jerusalem (1-2)
FC Twente Enschede
Petrzalka Bratislava or Tampere United (3-1)
AaB Aalborg or FK Modrica (5-0)
SK Brann Bergen or FK Ventspils (1-0)
Rapid Wien or Anorthosis (0-3)
