The transfer window has barely shut and we have an agonising ten weeks until the open sign is displayed, but this has not stopped the speculation starting once again.
It is no secret that Wenger tried to sign Marouane Chamakh this summer, the two clubs could not agree on a fee. Arsenal offered a fee in the region of £5million, whilst Bordeaux wanted double that price for a player who is out of contract next summer and stated his intentions on wishing to join Arsenal.
Chamakh will be free to discuss and sign a pre-contract agreement in January with any club and Arsenal are being linked with the player to either join in January for a nominal fee or in the summer on a free transfer.
If we sign Chamakh in January for say £1.5million, it would vindicate Arsenal’s stand in the summer, but you must question if sometimes you need to put aside your principles and pay the extra money, maybe not the extra £5million demanded by Bordeaux, but we should have pushed through a deal in August.
In an interview with Sky Sports Wenger indicated that the Chamakh saga has still got some way to go.
“He is a player we were close to signing,
“But at the moment we have lost a little bit of touch with him because there is no transfer period now.
“We might reconsider the position if it is needed in January.”
Wenger likes the player and is keen on him, so why wait for over half the season to go by before buying him? This is petty mindedness on the part of the Arsenal negotiators and could cost us severely come the end of the season.
